"This lake is just a few yards to the west of the Wheaton shelter hut, which was provided by the Wheaton family of Victoria ten years ago, in memory of their son, Billy Wheaton, who was killed in a mountaineering accident." (Island Mountain Ramblers)

Brentwood School student Billy Wheaton was killed in Europe in the early 1970s; "....students built the Wheaton Hut in his memory and we named the nearby lake for him." (November 2003 information from Ruth Masters, Comox District Mountaineering Club)
