The island was probably named by Captain Pender during his surveys in the area, 1866-69. It seems probable that Campbell River, Sayward District, Campbell Point, Loughborough Inlet, and Campbell Island, Milbanke Sound are all named after Dr. Campbell - see Campbell Bay, Mayne Island.
