Kinnaird (Post office) adopted 6 December 1951 on Columbia River Basin manuscript 14. Form of name changed to Kinnaird (Town) 5 August 1967. Form of name changed to Kinnaird (Station) 20 August 1979. Rescinded and incorrectly identified in Ottawa files 20 July 1988 (without signature from BC) with notation "Cross-Reference: Castlegar". Kinnaird remains an entrenched name for the area southwest of the airport; reinstated as Kinnaird (Urban Community) 15 May 1995 on 82 F/5 at the request of City of Castlegar Planning Department (file T.1.47)

Kinnaird incorporated as a village municipality 6 August 1948. Amalgamated with Town of Castlegar on 1 January 1974, and together incorporated as City of Castlegar.
