Incorporated as a Village Municipality 13 December 1962. Valemount (Post Office & Station) adopted 22 February 1963 on 83D; form of name changed to Valemount (Village) 29 January 1965, to conform to incorporated status.

Cranberry Lake Post Office was opened here 1 August 1913; re-named Swift Creek Post Office 1 January 1918; re-named Valemount Post Office 1 November 1928 (or 10 January 1929?), to match the name of CNR's station.

"....name of the new station, built in 1927 at mile 74.5 of the Albreda Subdivision, is Valemount; this is a coined word, suggested by the fact that the station is located in a valley within the [Rocky] mountains." (2 November 1927 letter from CNR.)
