Adopted 29 December 1945 on C.3450, as labelled on British Admiralty Chart 579, 1863 et seq.

Named c 1859 by Captain Richards, HMS Plumper, in association with the name of the island on which the hill is located: Commander Cayetano Valdes of the Spanish Navy, in command of the vessel "Mexicana", explored these waters in 1792 with Galiano.
