Named to maintain a reference to Spanish navigator Jose Maria Navaez' exploration and survey work in this area; he had named Bowen Island "Isla de Apodaca" in 1791. See the booklet "Isla de Apodaca" compiled by J.S. Matthews, Vancouver City Archivist, 1968.
