Walbran letter dated May 23, 1911- "I have in my possession one of the earliest charts issued by the Admiralty, Sydney Inlet to Nitanat, No. 584, dated 1861, and on this chart I note that the Indian village on Meares Island, now named on the present large chart...Clayoquot, is on my chart named Opitsat, the proper name of the village. Therefore I feel much gratified that the old name of Opitsat is to be restored. When I was in the sound I always heard it referred to as Opitsat." Ottawa File 0177.
