Various phonetic spellings on Ref Map 12A and other early maps for Nusatsum Mountain and Nusatsum River: Nootsatsum, Noosatum, Nutsatsum, Nusatsum..... The spelling that most closely resembles pronunciation would be "Nusatsum" according to August 1946 letter from F.C. Swannell, BCLS, and R.P. Bishop, BCLS, to Surveyor-General, Ottawa. (files T.1.37 and O.1.46)

According to Joseph Saunders, a Kimsquit man, the name means "where spring salmon spawn" (Topographic Survey field officer B.L. Anderson; Names List p.2, Ottawa file 93D.) Headwaters in the vicinity of 52° 12' 45" x 126° 15' 50" on 93D/1.
