Named in 1931 by J. Monroe Thornington after the steamer "Duchess," Captain F.P. Armstrong's famous steamboat which ran from Golden to Lake Windermere prior to the construction of the Kootenay Central Railroad in the late 1880s. The vessel was named in turn after the Duchess of Somerset (Lady Susan St. Maur), an early tourist in the region.
