"Named in association with Findlay Creek, itself possibly named for Jacques (Jace) Raphael Finlay [sic] - a well-known hunter and trader on the Upper Columbia in the days of David Thompson [c1811-1817]. Later there were two half-breed brothers of this name, working as outfitters in the East Kootenay." (© The Purcell Range of British Columbia by J. Monroe Thorington, American Alpine Club, 1946, p.85)

George Findlay and his brother came to this area in 1861 and discovered gold here in 1863; this led to the Kootenay gold rush of 1864-65.
