Origin Notes and History:

"Babine Mountains" adopted 2 April 1918 (Mountains of Western Canada, 1918), as labelled on BC map 1H, 1917. Identified as "Babine Mountain Range" in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924; listed in 1930 BC Gazetteer as "Babine Mountains". Changed to Babine Range 5 July 1951 on 93 L at 55º45' x 126º48'. Altered application 7 October 1989 on 93 L and 93 M (centred at 55º16' x 127º15').

Babine was the name applied by Northwest Company voyageurs to a sub-tribe of the Carrier Indians, on account of their habit of wearing "lip" ornaments (18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 1924). See also Babine Lake.
